How to read a supplier lead-time claim

“Four weeks” might start at deposit, drawing approval or material arrival. Without a start point and conditions, a lead-time figure is hard to compare.

A field-level check

Ask for the start event, product revision, order quantity, production calendar, shipping handoff and exceptions. Put the named assumptions beside the number. Compare the quote to the buyer's required milestone, not only to a marketing page.

Write down the exact field, the party that supplied the information, the original document or page, the date seen and the scope of the check. If a reviewer took an action, record that action rather than a general “verified” label. Reopen the source when the transaction or underlying document changes.

Where the inference stops

A historical delivery does not guarantee the next order. Also separate production lead time from transit and customs time, which may belong to other parties.

A missing answer is a question to resolve, not permission to substitute a guess. Separate a statement by the supplier from a public record and from a documented human review. No source in this article proves a quality ranking or an existing buyer relationship.

What to record before deciding

Publish a dated, attributed estimate only if its scope is clear. Put binding delivery milestones in the purchase agreement and keep the directory value informational.
